Loop Song
(2023)

“Loop Song” is a four-month participatory project working closely with local communities in Shanghai to explore and combine areas of sound, improvisation, performance, learning, and community building.

Through invitations and open calls, the artist gathered a temporary collective of eight members in different ages with various backgrounds. Collaborating with Yeren, an independent musician, the artist organized workshops on improvisational practice, allowing members with different musical experiences to respond and communicate with the space and each other using sound. Together they construct new languages using melody and rhythm as grammar and sound as characters. The formation of each “dialogue” will unavoidably contain chaos and disorder, which turns each performance into a unique work. The performance ends when all members tacitly agree the communication is complete.

Performance. Xintiandi Club One, Shanghai, China.
